The general definition of stylistics is the systematic study of style. The word style is rather frequently used in communication. One can say that they've got a great sense of style. A touch of style might be needed to improve something in a room, in a piece of writing, etc. So what IS then 'style'? How can it be defined? And what kind of style shall be used for a specific context? These are just a few questions that will be answered in the course Introduction to Functional Stylistics.
This course is intended for both those who study English and those interested in the study of style in language. It will help you get a better understanding of the main functions of language. We will look at the characteristic features of each functional style. We will see what language is used for a particular style. Special attention will be devoted to the analysis of stylistic devices and expressive means in various contexts.
