The course is a continuation of the previous course English Literature of the 19th century. The learners will get acquainted with the key features of the Modernist period as well as with the most prominent writers of the time. The course will consist of analysis of passages from major novels, short stories and poems. We shall start with the social criticism of Wells and Galsworthy, look at the way Lawrence depicted his characters' subconscious feelings, analyse the way Joyce experimented in his fiction, see what the stream of consciousness means. Similarly we will analyse passages from George Orwell's 1984. Special attention will be devoted the analysis of shorts stories and poems of the time. All in all, the course is intended to offer an overview of the Modernist period in English literature.
